Default R888R’s acting strange

Hi everybody out there in Vette land. I’m on my 4th set of triple 8R’s & beyond saying they are WITHOUT A DOUBT the best tire by far I’ve ever run in what’s so lovingly called
umm......”. SPIRITED DRIVING “ they are for my first time experiencing what I feel is like the tire becoming “ hard” or stiff if you will. Now that I can enjoy my car w/o getting heat stroke with the top down , I went out on “ the crest” with my friends & their Z06’s in mid 60’s degree temps. Thru the entire morning it felt as tho I’d literally bounce from from 1 bad bump to the next. My PROXES are still “ new” in that I mounted this set in February of this year & while I’ve pretty much trashed them tread wise I’m wondering if anybody else has experienced this stiff bouncy type ride. They are “ 35’s” in front & “30’s” rear so there’s not much sidewall for flex. I did hv this set heat treated if that’s what u call it so I’m wondering If that’s the issue. Or are they just worn out & this is how they start to behave. I’ve honestly never run a set to this extreme as I’ve usually taken them by now & sell them half used. Do triple 8’s become stiff & hard once they’ve reached the end of their “ heat cycles”? If so, how can u avoid this & or was it only because it was very chilly early on?? Plz let me know so I can try to avoid this issue in the future. Thanks so much in advance. Rob D. S Cal

Couple of photo's of the tires tread wear, including the Cdot numbers to get the age of the tires, and what tire pressure are you running them at?

As for real heat cycle in say track use of the R888r's, have seen them still fine up to around 60 cycle and a hell of lot better that the R7's that start to have problems after 8 heat cycles isntead. For street use, the problem is more of not getting them up to temp for street driving with the winter starting to take set, and not getting the max grip that you would with say running them when the road is 90 plus instead.

But yes, if you have the tires up to temp, everything else is fine, and they feel greased, then time for new tires. I have a set of XS's that the tires are just too old, rubber is starting to harden up and feeling greases, and spent the last few months just trashing them, since they are going to replaced in the spring.

hello
wouldnt waste your time with pics as they 'LOOK" fine but i know better. the age is less than 2 years old as i did check that. ive never accepted a set unless i know they are "fresh" . i appreciate it. im kinda wondering tho if i shud NOT test out these R7'S . about the only constant ive gotten where those babies are concerned is they are fabulous for a few 100 miles (300) tops i bet and then ............crap!! i tell ya its bad enuff i can trash a set of triple 8's in less than 700 miles and if the R7'S last less than half of a triple 8..........im not just wealthy enuff to flat *** throw money on a fire! and altho i promised myself AT LEAST ONE SET OF GOOD SLICKS TO SEE HOW MUCH MORE FUN I CUD HAVE(as opposed to my triple 8's)im truly wondering if they (the R7'S) are worth it. IN A NUTSHELL, I HAVE CANCER . AND IM TRYING TO COMPLETE A FEW THINGS ON MY BUCKET LIST WHILE AT THE SAME TIME....I KNOW THAT REGARDLESS OF MY SITUATION MY WIFE WHOM I LOVE MORE THAN ANYTHING IN THIS WORLD... WILL GO ON AND IM TRYING TO HAVE SOME FUN WHILE AT THE SAME TIME NOT SPEND MONEY THAT WOULD BE SUPER UNFAIR TO HER. Now, that said, ive only RECENTLY added a few last items to my C6 and managed ( and this is the honest truth) 526whp(NA-LS2) . she very well might be on the verge of flat *** blowing up..... i care but not hugely. the numbers arent important here.........what im asking PLEASE is if it were you, would you be willing to waste 1500 dollars on what will amount to 4 sundays on the "CREST"? PLEASE RESERVE COMMENTS ABOUT SLICKS ON THE STREET....PLEASE! IM not here to brag or give resumes but if you knew my background........TRUST ME........I CAN DRIVE. SO anyway....id sincerely appreciate ur input. because i have 2 full sets of BRAND NEW R7'S WRAPPED AND VACUUMED SEALED SITTING IN MY PARTS ROOM UPSTAIRS. AND UM BTW.....i will ONLY use the r7 if the ambient is at a minimum of 70 and itll reach 78. obviously that gives me a small window but thats ok with me. let me know and a sincere thank you for the info on my worn out R/TRIPLE 8.S. Bottom line on those is i guess ive finally found the age AND TEMP LIMIT( DONT RUN THEM WHEN ITS BELOW 68 DEGREES . FEEL FREE TO CALL if you like eight 1 eight ate 0 nine 37one three. thanks and god bless rob

Lets start here since Willow springs raceway is a rocks throw from the base.
What is your lap times around the track, and what suspension prep/mod's have you done to the suspension?

Willow springs is about 15 minutes from my house in Lancaster. But I’ve NEVER tracked her at a track day nor do I care to. She’s a Vert n I just don’t want to go thru all the rules n regs bs associated with it being a convertible not to mention I’ve got well over 2 decades of Professional Racing under my belt & although fun it’s 1 of those been there done that MANY times things . And yea I’ve got quite a few grand in suspension upgrades...custom stance coil overs & larger sway bars. Thanks for answering but I’ll most likely hv my fun with these slicks n sell em or just give em away. All this wasn’t such a big deal just curious if someone knew. That’s all. Thanks again n tk care. #1 yes R compound tires get slick/hard/unsafe when cold. in fact many of them have a specific temperature that the manufacture says never use them in degrees below that point.
#2 yes R compound tires have a certain number of heat cycles before they turn hard. most of the time even when tracking them that point is LONG before the tread is worn.

I would assume you’re out of temperature range especially if it’s happening in the morning and getting better in the afternoon. The pavement is cold your tires are cold. They get hard as a rock if you don’t have them heated up. I ran them on two different cars. And anytime it was below 60’s they were useless up to 70’s was hit or miss until they were warmed up.

HI AND THANKS STANG KLLER(KILLA)
Ya know , i kinda knew this but honestly??? im enjoying decent money for well the third time in my life(other 2 were both flying contracts overseas) and normally as id said USUALLY.........ive taken the damn things off way before now and sold them. like alot of us i have a wife that DOES NOT UNDERSTAND how its possible to completely trash a set of VERY EXPENSIVE tires in only 5-600 miles! and because of her profession(an ORTHO) she is terrified of my car.... and will not go with me. anyway my point is ive got 2 brand new sets r7's & R888R's in my living room & did not want to mount either set this late in the year. ya know what they say.... you never know till you really know another words learning these lessons can be expensive AND DANGEROUS!! Now that i have proof of how dangerous these street legal RACE TIRES can get...thanks to nice VETTE folk like ur self.....i can justify a winter or just getting colder set of wheels/tires. what tire wud u reccomend?? are MICHELIN CUPS sticky n behave well in say 55-67degree wx? thanks and let me know(robcdavis88@yahoo.com)

In the 20 years you professionally raced it never occurred that a cycled out R-compound competition tire would be garbage before the tread was used up?

I assume you raced boats or literally anything else that doesn't use tires.
