Default P0700 Transmission Code (Oh Crap!)

Recently I received a check engine light on my 2006 C6 Coupe. The dealer ran a diagnostic and came up with a module in the transmission was bad. Additionally, the dealer said there are metal shaving in the bottom of the trans pan. They are suggesting that I need to replace the transmission. Took the car to another shop and got the same diagnostic and suggested solution. The job looks to be about 4 thousand bucks. Am I that level of screwed, or might there be another solution short of buying another Corvette. No, I did not buy an extended warranty.

Brand new A6 trans are available for about $2500. Used for half of that. You'll also need a torque converter,14 qts of fluid and either a new/used radiator or an aftermarket cooler. Flushing the cooler lines is a lot easier than trying to replace them. It's a full day on jackstands in your garage or 3-4 hours at your favorite indie shop for labor. I'd spring for a new shifter cable at the same time. So used and your sweat is $1600, plus $400-500 if someone else sweats. At the stealership you're probably closer to $5K for all new.

Yes, it really sucks.
Personally, I'd find someone with a tech 2 to narrow down the code to identify the exact problem. A quick scan through my service manual doesn't spot 0700, but does have several 07XX codes. If you can determine what module is bad, just replace it, clean the pan, change the filter, refill fluid and drive it again. If there is a lot of crap in the fluid, repeat the fluid/filter change 1 or 2 more times at 50-100 mile intervals. You might get lucky and be under $500.

The dealer did a lousy job with the diagnostic. But the second shop (a guy in my Corvette club) did a much better job at nailing down the module in question. I will locate the paperwork and provide the module code. The other thing to consider is the fact that winter is close at hand here in the Mid-West. I will be putting the car to bed for the winter very soon. I may just wait for spring before doing anything.

Did I mention my car has an automatic trans. Will any C6 automatic transmission fit and function in my C6 Vette, or must I buy the same year C6 Automatic transmission as the car?
