So I purchased a C6 about a month ago. I didn't notice it during the test drive (my fault), but there is a pretty bad metal grinding/crunching sound when I turn sharply. The dealership just gave me this diagnosis: The grinding sound is coming from the rear differential, as the clutch pack has gone bad from sitting on the lot.
Does this sound valid and legitimate or should I be concerned about something more nefarious?
I've heard of stuck clutches on c3's. The fix is either to make sure the diff is full of oil and posi additive, and then go out and do some tight figure 8's in a parking lot to break the clutches loose or tear it open and rebuild. But this is for diff's that haven't turned for years.
Some times a fluid change is all that is needed.
Do you have a warranty?
If not, I'd get a second opinion before doing anything.
Common issue, change the fluid, it’s easy to do and then a series of about 8 tight figure eights. Problem solved. When moving slowly and turning they just stick. New diff fluid with the updated formula is the ticket.
