Default Oil Cooler for C6

Anybody know of any oil cooler kits specifically for the C6? I already have a trans oil cooler and don't know if there's enough real estate left for a standard 19-row core. I thought I saw something on You Tube about installing a kit with a narrow core that ran the length of the bottom of the radiator (This might have been on a Camaro). Thanks.

You have a bunch of options. Not only from the aftermarket, but also with factory parts. GM had at least four different engine oil cooler setups for the C6. Two were conventional air-to-oil heat exchangers mounted in front of the radiators, one with a long core (Z06) and one with a short core (Grand Sport). Knowing more about your application would help narrow it down.

Do you need a cooler? How high are your oil temperatures?

My oil temp runs around 225 degrees in normal to slightly rambunctious driving. At 100K miles, guess I'm just thinking of things I can do to extend the car's longevity... I'm already hearing a lifter rattle on cold starts and general mild valvetrain noise above 3500 or so RPM. Planning a cam swap, lifters, head machining and perhaps a new oil pump this summer, headers, 3200 stall converter and a torque tube rebuild in a few weeks (I'm doing a lot of overtime).

Your oil temperatures sound okay to me. The factory air-to-oil cooler setups can run so cold that your engine never warms up. I would suggest looking at the short core (Grand Sport) cooler with an aftermarket thermostat.

Sounds like I can put this item on the back burner for the time being. Will look into the Grand Sport option. Thanks for your help, torquetube.

Aftermarket oil cooler thermostat I mean. The factory lines didn't have a thermostat.

Bingo. And the engine oil temps get to operating temp much quicker than using an air/oil cooler.

This is true, but the flip side is that it's not as effective at cooling. If you're actually suffering severe oil temps, the air-to-oil coolers work better.

I have an LS3 with a "dry" (more like "damp") sump in my GS, and, since I do a lot of HPDEs, I upgraded my cooler to a Setrab from Improved Racing. They know their stuff and I would recommend them first and foremost.

We make a kit for the C6, but it's a high end kit designed for track use, probably overkill for your purposes: http://www.improvedracing.com/oil-co...600-p-768.html

A cooler running engine will have cooler oil temps without any oil cooler upgrades. I added the Dewitts with integral EOC to my M6 Grand Sport. On a cool day, or, worse yet, cold day..... I absolutely hated the fact that it tookforever for the engine oil temps to even get to 150* with the stock air/oil cooler. Yeah, if you're tracking your Vette a lot, an air/oil cooler probably a great idea. For a mostly street driven Vette with an occasional track event, I'd go Dewitts and not look back. My GS could idle, parked, in 95+ degree heat, and the ECT's wouldn't get over 200*. That was with a 160* stat and aggressive fan settings.

The Dewitts was a bolt in affair with just the radiator and GM Z51 oil lines. Pretty easy and effective upgrade.

I too had a DeWitt's with integral EOC and I'm switching to an external cooler. The integral EOC is better for warm-up but at high load I can exceed 280°F oil temperature. The DeWitt's is also pretty expensive; an external cooler and lines is cheaper and easier to install. Addition of an oil cooler thermostat would bring the price up closer to the aftermarket radiator.

The kit I purchased included a 180* thermostat, which aided in the warming up of oil to 150*. Food for thought.
