Default 2006 C6 EBCM codes C0550 and C0281

I will post details below, but i am pretty sure my EBCM needs replaced. QUESTION - Do i have to match the 2 digit code on the module to a replacement module? Or are all EBCMs interchangeable for the C6?

Details - I rebuilt the car this summer. It has 58k on it and had light front and rear end damage. No airbags deployed. After getting it all back together it started intermittently showing codes C0161, C0281, and C0550. I could reset it after about 5 minutes with a scan tool and they would not re-trip. Once the car was warmed up they would not come back. Over the last two weeks they started coming back after resetting, within a few miles/min. I couldn't find a specific issue or condition that was causing them. I bought a new battery, and after installing the DTCs did not come back on for the remainder of the day. Next day, issue was back. The new battery was and is on a battery tenders and shows good standing voltage. I checked and cleaned all the grounds, including the one by the ebcm. Checked and cleaned the EBCM and BCM connectors. Now I currently have the C0550 and C0281 DTCs set. If i am wrong about the EBCM let me know. If there is something else to check, let me know as well. Thanks in advance for any help.

Your right about the codes being for the ECBM, C0281 for the ABS /TSC systems, and C0550 for the Electronic Control unit of the ECBM.
It appears that you checked the things that have to be checked according to the Service manual. I have attached that section in case you don't have a manual.
DTC codes C0281 and C0500 starting on Page 85- It may give you a path forward.
If all the wiring at the connectors at the ECBM and grounds are Ok, it may well need a replacement of the ECBM.

Good luck

Do you have a TECH II scanner?
With a TECH II you can tell if it is an open circuit. If you get C0550-00, that indicates an internal ECBM malfunction exists, and if you get C0550-04, that indicates system voltage is less than half the ignition voltage continuously for 0.04 seconds.
Any DTC condition that is OK, will clear with the TECH II.
I'm not sure if the section of the service manual helped at all, but as far as your concern about needing a certain 2 digit code on the ECBM module, the paper service manual for the 2006 does not state that anywhere when it comes to the replacement. It does say the following:
When the ECBM is replaced, it "must be" reprogrammed by a TECH II as in: software and calibrations are flash programmed into the ECBM. The ECBM receives the vehicle identification number information from the vehicle in order for the ECBM to automatically calibrate to the vehicle. The TECH II and the Service Programming System (SPS) must be followed. (found in the Vehicle control system section) of the service manual.

That's all I can offer. Hopefully, people that have replaced the ECBM can give you more perspective and direction.

Good Luck

So I ordered a used ECBM of ebay. It was labeled J5, seller said it would fit 05-08., Mine was JL. It took me exactly 1 hr to do the swap. I only removed the 4 bolts holding the front sway bar, and then dropped it out of the way for access. Nothing else was removed. It did take various tools to get to all the T25 torx bolts to remove the ECBM from the ABS pump. I immediately hooked the connector back up, battery and took the car out for a test drive. After starting, no lights. I cleared the old codes and took a 10 mile drive. Still no lights or codes. I did get one message on the cluster "calibrating xxxxx" but I missed the rest. Prior to the swap the lights came on pretty quick. I am confindant at this point the issue has been resolved. The part cost me 78 bucks and came with the abs pump. For reference, fixmyairbags.com said they can fix the C0550 code issue for $150.

Long story short - pretty sure it doesn't matter what the "XX" code is, as long as the EBCM is from the correct year range. In my case 05-08.

Glad that you got the issues resolved. Great job on the swap out. It's also assuring to know that you did not need to get it reprogrammed with a Tech II as the Service manual said it needed done.

Hopefully, no more codes will show up for you.
