I have a 2008 base automatic convertible. I purchased it new and have 14,000 miles on it. I went to a car show yesterday and had the dash set for " average
fuel economy" .This was a 4 mile round trip and it started out reading 26.3 and dropped to 21.9. At the stop lights , standing still, it would drop 2 to 3 tenths.
This is not a recent fill of the tank. It has been in there for at least 3 weeks. Does this sound like a serious problem ? Thank you, Jay Smith

The fewer miles traveled since you reset the average, the faster it will go down. Sounds like you reset it at the last fill-up and haven't driven many miles since.
I have an 08 automatic too. I bought it when it was 10 years old with 39k miles and have driven 18k myself in last 2 years. My experience is that the fuel economy around town will average 17, and on the freeway 28. If the reset button was pressed recently you will see the average changing pretty fast. Take it on the freeway, stick in cruise control, and it should settle down to about 28 average.
This excellent fuel economy (for a 6.2l engine) is because the engine has digital management using an array of sensors situated everywhere in the power train. The good news is that if one of them goes wrong you will get an orange 'check engine light' and there will be codes that can be read with a scanner telling you which sensor has gone wrong.
If you have no check engine light its pretty safe to assume its all good. To be sure, swing by Autozone and ask them to see if you have any codes - they will check them for free.
My recently purchased 06 convertible with 168k gets 28 mpg with cruise set at 79 on the interstate. Sure its a lot lower in traffic but i think you are worrying about nothing.
