I know they are built different but since my 05 went out 150k miles so not complaining. Is it possible to drop in one from an 09 base? I have a z51 but as far as I have researched it's no difference. I know I can rebuild but the one I am looking at costs me nothing low miles 40k.
Physically, yes you could use an '09. However, '05-'07 used one rack, '08 was a stand alone, and '09-'13 used their own. The '08 used different electronics which will cause the steering effort to not be correct. The '09-'13 rack was a variable "ratio" rack, and the electronics were different as well.

Not to hijack, but could I put a 09 rack into my 08? Or will the electronics not work.

The electronics in the '09 will provide a different steering effort of the '08. The electronics control the steering effort based on vehicle speed and in '08 they were designed differently. Putting a different year rack in an '08 will result in lighter steering effort than what was originally put into the '08.
