If I could precisely locate where to cut, and it looks feasible, as well as being feasible to make a cover for the hole that is not noticeable under the carpet, I would cut.
Is it an auto or manual? If it's a manual it can be done in a couple of hours. I'd much rather do that than chop my car up but that's just me. Your car, your decision
Ehhh, I would not call it chopping it up. I have skills, by the way. And it's an automatic. One could argue, that GM screwed up in a big way to design something like the fuel tank that has to have the transmission dropped and the fuel tank dropped just to get a a sensor or two. Designing with an access panel is a much better idea, I think.
I cut a access panel into the trunk area of my 87 Z28 to change fuel pump. It's pretty common with those cars. I have no idea if it would work on a c6. I have a bad fuel sending unit that fails intermittently. I fuel gets below a half tank it goes to empty. I just keep it full all the time, but I'm sure it will fail completely at some point. Then I'll have to deal with it.

I did the same. So much faster. Put rug back and forget about it.
