Default Starter Heat shield

The only issue I am running into with long tubes on my LS7 is the fact that here in South Georgia, after the car runs awhile, and gets parked for a very short time, the starter seems to struggle a bit.

Starter tests fine, so does the alternator and the battery. Had the car up on a lift when I had it tuned, no issues with the routing of the battery cables. So, heat soak.

I found one nice heat shield from Lingenfelter, but for crying out loud, a 120 bucks for a piece of stainless steel and some ceramic coating?

Looking at a DEI wrap one from Jegs, it had a ton pf positive reviews.

What are you guys using on your Vettes with long tube headers?

I used the wrap in the past and it made things worse as no air flow to cool the starter. I put the shield style on and all issue went away.

I know its pricey.

The reason your starter is dragging a bit is because of the distance between your starter and your battery. Kinda the nature of the beast. I've had three C6's all with long tube headers. Only problem child was the M6 Grand Sport which had the battery in the right rear cubby like the Z cars. I lived with it. Always started for me. You could upgrade to heavier gauge wires to get more juice to the starter. Meh, I'd just learn to live with it.

I use nothing and haven't had a heat soak problem. I suspect you have a different brand header and or larger primary tubes than mine. Any non-flammable shield will work to reduce heat transfer and still allow lots of airflow will help. Just a small sheet of aluminum wired in place can be effective. Don't cut up the wife's cookie trays, unless you buy her new replacements first.

I just bit the bullet and bought the Lingenfelter one. I figured it wouldn't hurt.

Buy it once, buy it right.

I will probably, at a later time, buy the heavier gauge wire and route it as old motorhead suggested.

Hoxxoh -ain't no way in hell am I going to cut up one of the wife's cookie pans - she gets those Pampered Chef or similar and they are freaking expensive. Not to mention, the doctor bill from removing the remainder of the sheet from the back of my head.

Lingenfelter heat shield on, header wrapped and even on a upper 90s day, no issues as before. It cost me some skin on my knuckles and as I was crawling out from under, it ripped skin off my right knee and I bled all over the place. At least it was done right.

Hello
My 2011 GS(6M) had starter heat soak. I purchased the Lingenfelter shield. Did you install the shield in place without header removal? Do you believe it's necessary to wrap the headers for a street car in So. Florida?
thank you

Lingenfelter Stainless Starter Heat Shield is a good solution.

I use nothing. Long tubes, cam and hi flow cats. Zero heat issues even when it’s 120 out and I go on a cruise no issues. Let the air flow baby. No need to wrap or cover any thing. Those items will soak heat …..duh…..
