Default Axle back exhaust ...

I have a '13 GS and want to upgrade exhaust. What are the advantages of a 3.0" axle back to a 2.5"?

I'm presuming you don't have headers. If you were to replace all the pipes from the manifolds back with 3" (including the cats) then there would be some improvement to engine breathing. However, just changing out the back end to 3" won't yield much if anything. Best mod is to go with headers, X-pipe with hi-flow cats & then the hi-flow mufflers.

If you add headers most are 3" X pipe then reduce to 2-1/2". Changing from 3" X to 3" axle back would be minimal to zero gain.

Mike when you're ready for a new exhaust or headers let me know I'd love to get you a discount code on my website. As others have stated, you'll get a marginal increase in flow and volume jumping up to a 3" axleback. The right exhaust will get you a better tone and/or more drone control. If horsepower gains is your focus, I'd look into getting headers first and foremost. I can help you with that too.

You could actually say zero to negative gain and be more accurate, since the rate of flow from a NA LS3 would be so diminished, it'd cause backpressure.
Then again, without a comprehensive plan to create additional power vs a different sound, the issue of power is moot.
