We have an 05 Conv Base model with an auto transmission and sometimes the shifter remains stuck in park. This recently happened and I want to repair the problem without cutting the claw or eliminating the OEM safety features. It's been recommended to replace the shifter and cable (which is expensive) and addresses the manufacturers recall issued for 2005-06 vehicles in 2008. I've seen the you tube videos which recommend replacing a $6.00 microswitch which seems very reasonable but not sure that is the only problem. I'm looking towards the experts or experienced folks on this forum for the most common fix for this problem and any direction. I've attached the videos for a thorough explanation of the problem and I'm aware of the bypass using the accessory mode on the start button but I'd like to resolve the issue vs dealing with it. You're input is welcomed and appreciated. Thanks, Al.
Replace the microswitch, and it will fix your issue until that switch becomes weak, and or fails. GM loves to replace the whole shifter and cable top poor unsuspecting owners.
You can always attach a tie back to the locking pawl, run it through to the center console, and it will be there for you to release it if you ever gets stuck in Park again.
That way, you are not taking any safety features away, but have a way of emergency release if required.
