EPA acting on Performance modifications
Anyone worried about the EPA coming after and fining Performance companies making modifications to exhaust, timing and any adjustments to the ECM. Apparently in some states you are now not allowed to make any changes to a car or engine that has a vin number on it. Saw a post on utube from PFI speed who are participating in race week about them receiving a fine notice. Any thoughts?

It's definitely concerning. I assume they'll start with the bigger guys and work their way down, but maybe they'll make an example out of some little guys too just to scare people. It's going to be an interesting couple of years it looks like.

With GM locking the computer on the C8, this is just the start of things to come. Especially with more and more manufacturers committing to EVs. Love it or hate it, its the way things are moving.

not worried at all. I live in NC a Free state! all of Ya'll in them there Yankee states will just continue to get screwed by your government. I have never had a cop pull me over and asked to look at my motor. I've had police officers pull me over just to look at my car though, 
and then comment about their own cars.
I had a Trooper pull me over to look at my license plate on my Camaro, Z/28 LS1, wanted to see if the plate was real and then we talked about my car, He liked it.

If no one saw this coming with all the diesel trucks rolling coal on the streets, then they need their head checked.
It used to be that you just re-spooled the diesel turbos to make more power with a touch more fuel (while the exhaust still ran semi clean), but when tuners went cheap on the newer trucks by just adding in a ton more diesel/ripping off the newer diesel converters that kept the exhaust clean (to just increase the HP output slightly on the street), all this was due to happen instead.
As for the EPA, there fine bases is all about the monitoring of the catalytic systems in play, so what is coming out of the exhaust pipe, it still within the legal limits.
So in regards to PFI being fined, it was the Hondata 300s which the EPA interpreted to be an emissions defeat device, hence back to the whole rolling coal thing that started all this to begin with.

There will be major pushback on this just due to the amount of money involved. If they go after every infraction they will be shutting down a billion dollar industry in a month or two. I don’t see that happening. I think one of two things will happen. The aftermarket world will be forced to work with the EPA (worst case scenario since costs will skyrocket), or the next admin will flip the bill and things will do back to normal. I personally hope there is so much pushback that the epa will spend most of the next 4 years trying to figure it out. All it’s going to take is one credible person being given the chance to discuss this in an open conversation to shut down the whole thing (I hope). May be having to mod my car sooner than I wanted to at this point.

But once the EPA, or any federal agency for that matter, gets the ball rolling inertia takes over.
I just hope this isn't the beginning of something larger. We shall see. We shall see.
