I have a TPMS sensor starting to fail and give occasional bogus warnings on my dash. I wanted to know what would happen if I just removed all the sensors in the tires? I assume I'd have to also disable a receiving unit in the car, or at least pull a fuse for that to avoid CELs or warnings? Any downside to not running TPMS on Vette tires that originally came with them?
Buy new Schrader sensors pn 20076 from Rockauto for $25/sensor.
And if you don't want to install them in your tires, make a pvc air chamber and seal them up in there and fill it up with air to 30 psi. You will have to marry them to your car first with something like
Maybe it could be easier to leave the old TPMSs in place and just find and remove a fuse for this function? Anyone know if disabling these sensors can be that easy? I'd luv to get rid of these pressure sensor functions since I'm old school and regularly check my pressures manually.
Problem is that TPMS is mandated by Federal Law. There are gray areas, but service shops are forbidden to knowingly disable the system. Might also check with your state laws concerning the system function and if you will fail any annual vehicle inspections as a result of disabling or removing this system on your own. Also, I believe the C6 nannies use the TPMS system information to control speed and traction systems. I have personally had a tire pick up a nail and the system limited my car to no more than 50mph.
If the system is working, there are no downsides and it can tell you when you need to air up a tire. I would just keep it in working shape and regard it as another maintenance item that will require attention, as needed.
I drive a lot of miles and that system has saved my bacon several times. At least once on my Vette and several more times on other vehicles. Personally, I wouldn't want to be without it.
Thanks everyone for your input. I'll probably just have the sensors replaced in the near future...
Lets face it you own expensive car, and when I started getting XXXX on my DIC, I replaced that tire, and two months later another one, that's when I had the other three replaced.
Here is place, but you can google there is lot places sell them at all different prices.
Bite the bullet and just replace the bad sensor. A tire shop can do this in no time, without having to fully remove the tire, or rebalance. I had one replaced about 2 months ago. It was reading erratically. No issues since.
its best to just get all 4 new.... ebay - cultrag .... might as well throw new rubbers on with it.... probably be able to hock the old ones on craigslist or offerup etc....

Really, I thought the tire had to be removed from the rim in order to change out the TPMSs.
yeah gotta dismount and swap then remount and balance (to be sure)...
This is not correct. You can break the bead on the outside of the tire and then replace the TPMS sensor and re-inflate the tire. The balance is not affected since the back bead holds the tire in place. I have done this myself many times.

my meaning was essentially this... but you are correct...
