2008 with 130k miles, I am second owner.
Was heading out yesterday and about 5 miles from home the DIC displayed “engine hot. Turn offair conditioning.
I did, and trned around and hustled home. Temp gauge needle was all the way to the LEFT. (100)
reservoir half full, no smell of being hot. Any thoughts?
If your temp gauge was all the way to the left then your engine is cold. Sweeps left to right. IE, cold to hot. More info needed. Possible temp sensor fail.

This is a good list although you may have a problem locating the "coolant lever" instead just check the "coolant level".
As to the cooling fan function. The usual culprit is a burned out connector. You would have to disconnect and perform a good visual inspection of the terminals to locate any burned contacts.
Item #1 above is your most likely problem and I believe it is located just in front of the first spark plug on the left side of the engine.
Let us know what you find to be the fix as we see this item fairly frequently as the C6 ages.

Engine was not cold. It had about 10 miles of run time by the time I got home. It would be well above 100 degrees. I kinda figured it could be a sensor.

Thanks for the input. I just got home. I will check things out tomorrow. I could hear the fan running with the ac on—didn’t pay that much attention once I got home, because we were now half an hour late.

UPDATE
I tapped the sensor lightly with a brass punch. DIC changed from XXXF to 167. Gauge changed from needle at 100 to about 170. Getting a new sensor now. Everything else is ok—no leaves, bags, burned wires, etc. I am 2nd adult owner and the car looks like a 30k-mile car because of how we have maintained it. Thanks for the help!

When is the last time the coolant was replaced? Should be getting close to it's 3rd coolant change (5 year max).
