Default MRC Shocks

Hello all. I have a 2013 Grand Sport and took it in to the dealer to check the ride control because the ride is the same on either setting. I have just under 50k miles and the dealer tells me all 4 shocks are leaking and need to be replaced. Is it common for MRC shocks to go out so soon? Is it possible to be an issue with an electronic module or something (but there are no codes popping up)? I would hate to pay the steep price of replacing to find it was something electronic.

Welcome to the forum. There is no way that all four of your MRC shocks are "leaking". The MRC shocks will "weep" a slight amount of oil and that is normal & a well known & documented item by GM. Not sure if you took the car to a GM/Chevy dealer, but if you did, shame on them for not looking up the TSB (attached for your review and decision on your specific problem). It is also well known that it is difficult to tell the difference between production tour & sport modes. You should notice the difference in hard cornering & uneven pavement at higher speeds, but not many drive at this level. Use the forum search and look up "Jim Mero". He was one of the Chevy developers of the MRC programming and has an upgrade that is highly recommended to be applied to all MRC-optioned C6 from 2009-2013. I have upgraded and the difference is now noticeable between the modes and the suspension is much more compliant and not so harsh. My low-back definitely appreciates the upgrade.

You did right to question your dealer by contacting the forum. You will find loads of help here.

Good luck and enjoy your C6.

I had the MRC shocks on 2 of my C6s and I can tell you that it's difficult to tell the difference in the 2 settings unless you're on some rough roads.

FYI - a dealer told me the same thing about my 2013 GS when it only had about 8,000 miles on it. I think it's total BS, just a money maker for them.

I have a well maintained 2006 3LT convertible with 48k miles. It has the F55 MRC option as well.. When I switch from Tour to Sport I can't tell the difference immediately. If I drive over a rolling (up and down) road surface in Tour, the car is more bouncy. The same road in Sport presents a less bouncy ride. These shocks were built to last the lifetime of the vehicle. If you lose a shock due to a defect you'll receive a message on the DIC. These shocks cost on average $500 a piece. The dealer probably wants to charge you $3000 to install them. Unless they're dripping fluid, they are probably just fine.

I can say all 4 mine leaked at he same time. Felt like a boat ride in a bouncing lowrider. I had oils stains on ground under each shock and tons of crud on each. This was at 38k miles I think on a 2011.
