I recently have had a periodic service traction control light come on and it does not really have any problems with my traction control so I was wondering why these service lights come on and then go away if I restart my car 2009 corvette base model. I also want to know if when the service traction control light comes on so does the little corvette pictured doing a burnout light. And I know when that light comes on that the traction control is usually off . If my service light comes on is my traction control working or not at that point ? I see alot of different fixes to this issue and was hoping to not take it to a shop as it could run into alot of repair bills and thats not in my budget. Is there any other solutions to this problem other than taking it to a shop to have them charge me hundreds of dollars for troubleshooting the problem?? I know it could be something very simple but not sure if I can figure it out. Nothing is wrong with my traction control but the stupid light keeps coming on and Im tried of it. where should i look to fix this problem first ?
Below is an older thread that touches on several items that could cause the service light. Hopefully, one of them will point you in the right direction. Otherwise, you may need to make a trip to a reputable Corvette service shop to identify and resolve the issue for you.
It can be numerous things but most common is misfires. Oddly enough misfires will trigger it. If you have any doubt about misfires get them resolved. A good scanner can show you for sure.
Yes so I believe it is misfires as my mechanic told me that I had lots of misfires.. I think if i am not mistaken he said I had hundreds or even thousands of misfires. While he was scanning it back a few months ago, but he said it is most likely the plugs or the wires. So I went and replaced them both and the check engine light came back on after just a few days and the traction control service and active handling service light still comes on with the check engine light usually hand in hand. I can reset the active handling service light and it will stay off for a day maybe two and the check engine light will sometimes just not stay on and will be off for maybe a couple few days but will reappear as always along with the traction service light. So my plugs looked fine and my wires I dont know but my car runs the same as before and I really cant feel the misfires. I should be able to at least feel them ? Could it be just a tiny misfire that I dont even feel like maybe a coil going bad or a couple of them? Thats the only thing left that would cause all those misfires right? How do I find out what is causing those ? I guess I can start looking for a honest shop around here that will not try to overcharge my *** because I drive a corvette... Happens all the time and I am done with these auto repair shops or dealerships. All of them are want to be mechanics .. I need to find a vette guy who is very honest and forthcoming and not overpriced is there such a thing?
There are so many things that cause this as I am reading all these posts about this issue and it is the brake fluid or the steering column or the plug by the fuse box or the plug under the battery tray, or the clip under the drivers side dash area or the monkeys flying out of my butt... I am not so lucky as these other vette owners who stumble across the solution to the problem and fix it by cleaning off a ground wire somewhere.. No way, I will most likely have to spend a fortune at two or three different places and only to find out all was for nothing as the lights just keep appearing after all the repairs and unnecessary new parts and labor.. Thanks for your help though everyone I will just put up with the lights
If you still have misfires get those fixed. Even a small amount will throw the active handling error. Could be plugs, wires, coils, or even injectors. Other possibilities too but those are most likely.
Best bet is a scan tool to figure out which cylinder is causing it and go from there.
Sorry you are having difficulties in identifying your problem(s). First, you should post all of the OBD2 codes resulting from your check engine light. If a mechanic did not give you a list, drop by the closest auto parts store and have them recover the codes for you and be sure to make or get a written list. Posting this information can help to narrow down the problem. Also, include a list of items that have already been reviewed/replaced and discounted as problematic to narrow the search.
Also, once you resolve the problem, please post the solution so others may learn from your experience.
