I have a 2005 that has shut down at low speed a couple of times and the car seems confused on the restart. I have brought it to a Chevrolet dealer and they said as follows. Tested circuits and found ecm power and ground circuits tested good. Found intermittent internal failure of engine control module. Part is on back order and waiting for who knows how long? Thoughts on this and is there a good dependable shop in the Twin Cities area that can do this or GM only? They make it sound like 2 different parts. Are they easy to get to? I have some skills and tools. Reprogramming is what they said is my big problem.
On a base car like yours, the ECM is pretty easy to access. You have to remove the right front wheelwell panel that is located at the rear of the wheelwell. I'm not sure how commonly available 2005 ECM's are. If they are no longer available from GM, you might be able to find a used one on eBay. Your dealer is correct about the need to have it programmed, and that is going to cost you. One word of caution is that often times a problem will seem to be related to a control module, when in fact it ends up being caused by something else. Expert diagnostics are invaluable. Control modules do fail, but it is quite rare, so be prepared for the possibility that you may replace the ECM and find that the car still doesn't run.
Thanks for your reply. As you know I had the expert diagnostic done and I still have questions after your response as to what else would it be after I spend 1200.00 at GM for a new ECM?
Okay, so it is the same thing by two different names is what I have found out. It needs replacing so has anyone replaced one? It does not sound like I can get a new one any longer so looking for some ideas. It needs to be programmed to my car but other than that it has been hard to get any info. Thought`s on this?
Just updating hoping this will help anyone with the same problem. The ECM was bad and I was lucky to find a used one after having a salvage yard locate one for me. The next problem was finding a shop that could actually program it to my car as Chevrolet would not help because it was a used part. A friend told me about a shop in St. Paul called Twin City Performance that took care of me. They are the real deal.
