A few years back everyone in the world ran a Holley hi tam On their LS7. Now it seems like everyone has faded towards a Tony mamo msd. Does the msd really out perform that well or is it good enough and not having g to cut up the. Car ?
Depends on what you are looking for. Don't want to cut the hood, cowl, or run a cowl hood? Ported MSD.
I picked up big power over my Mamo ported MSD and 5mph at the track. Plenty other people made 20-40whp more, making the switch. It all depends on the setup and the overall goal. Don't let anyone tell you the Hi RaM LoSeS a ToN oF miDrAngE, especially if they don't know the setup. The Hi Ram shines from 5800 and beyond, so you need to rev the engine higher to utilize that powerband.
Lots of fast cars with either manifold. Just depends on your end goal.
If you type in 440 LS motor Westech Holley it will take you to a lovely test (8-minute video) they did on a 440 cubic inch engine with a 250/267 hydraulic roller cam and I think Dart LS7 heads, 2-inch headers and 13 to 1 compression (so a pretty stout NA motor). They tested a tunnel ram style, a Holley Hi Ram and an MSD. The MSD was out of the box stock and I could see a ported MSD adding another 10-15 to it numbers across the board. The tunnel ram won at like 750 hp the high ram was like 730 hp and the MSD 720 hp. The peak tq for all manifolds was around 610-625. That being said the MSD was the best up to about 6,200 against the high ram and about 5,700 against the tunnel ram. With a port MSD those number would go out a few hundred more rpm before the crossover. The other manifolds shined above 6,500 but a ported MSD would not be that far behind. The dyno graph speaks for itself if you live under 6,500 the MSD especially ported is the way to go. The dyno graph with all manifolds is about 7 minutes 20 seconds into video.
Engine Masters does an episode on all the different Holley "RAMS" as well. They have an ultra low, a low, a mid, and a high. Some of the results were surprising.
