Default Block coolant plug question

On the 28mm coolant plug on the side of an LS2 block, should there be a sealing ring? The shop manual shows a sealing ring if you are installing a block heater, but they don't show it for the plug. All the other plugs have aluminum sealing rings. The pictures of new plugs shows thread sealant, but no ring.

Hello. We use these type at work, this is kind of industry standard now a days. Still pipe plug thread but it does not thread far into it and does not rely on threads wedging to make the seal. Either are fine to use in reality, tapered pitch threads get super tight after a long time is why they got away from it i think. Go to local dealer and order one, prob cheap, dont cut corners on a cooling system, i always have bad luck with them.

These have a rubber flat gasket that tucks into the shoulder.

I may be wrong, but in my experience as a tool maker and machine builder, the industry seems to be moving away from NPT to straight pipe threads. I'm thinking that's what you have here. Not 100%, but fairly sure......

HELLO, IM A DIE MAKER ALSO LOL. Yes BSP is what they use but im pretty sure American cars are still pipe thread but use those bsp style plugs now. Both are very close, even when u hold the threads to each other looks almost same except npt widens out. I doubt a large plug 28mm size woukd use those crush washers but idk for sure. The dealer is best bet for dumb stuff like that imo.
