Default Red or Blue Locktite

Going to replace the axel nuts. Bought the Dorman axel nut but what about the Locktite, red or blue? I’m leaning towards the red because that is more permanent. Why replace you say, just peace of mind I guess. It’s on a 07 Z51
Thanks

272 Loctite is recommended. 271 Loctite is also red, but is for smaller fasteners.

Use the red. Your old nut can also be used as a lock nut.

I think most ppl use the red 272 Loctite and you can use the old nut as a lock nut also but that might be excessive if you use the Loctite. Be careful not to over torque the nut.

I know this has been beat to death on this forum but what is the proper torque? I’ve heard 118 ft lbs to 160ft lbs. I want a definite answer!
Remember this torque is for a old axel, which has already been torqued once, not a new one.

Yeah there’s a lot of debate on torque and the spec has been changed over the years. If you’re going to use Loctite torque to 140ft lbs and you’ll be good to go.

Red requires a torch to ever loosen. There is Orange with is supposed to be as strong as red but can be loosened with hand tools.

Well today I checked the axel nuts. The passenger side was loose, I couldn’t turn it without the socket but it spun off with no effort. Driver side was tight. I took both off and replaced with new Dorman axel nuts 34 mm. Used Locktite 271 instead of 272. Torqued to 140lbs. I’m done thinking about it.
Thanks to everyone who responded!

update, now that I finished the wheel nuts and new rear sway bar links about a couple months back, no noise coming from the rear at all. It must of been that rear pass. wheel nut that was causing the noise. Easy job!
