Just installed a freshly rebuilt engine(cam bearings were down to copper at 55k miles). I have a no crank condition. I want to jump the starter relay to make sure the starter isn't the issue. If I jump the 87 and 30 terminals it should crank correct? Do I need to engage the clutch? Right now it doesn't crank when I jump it with the clutch depressed.
You should be able to easily check if there is at least some fuel pressure by removing the cap on the fuel rail an pressing the schreader (sic) valve momentarily. Some fuel should squirt out. Try turning the key on for a moment first; listen for the fuel pump. No fuel pressure, no crank...
BTW ... The engine will turn over, but will not start. No power to the spark plugs and no fuel to the injectors will be provided ... no need to touch the start button when doing this.
At least you will know if the starter is working or not.
Depending on the brand, but some aftermarket headers have been known to cause the contact terminals in the starter motor solenoid to burn up from heat .(do to how close one of the header's primary tubes are located in relation to the starter solenoid).
