gps map not being read

gps map not being read
like the title says my disc is saying read error or asks me to insert disc after the disc is already
inserted.
everything else seems to function normally.
I am able to access the radio controls.
Local Chev. mechanic says the disc reader is ng.
looking for advice,
do I replace
the unit
The car is an 08 coupe.I would prefer to keep the car original
inserted.

Might just be a dirty optical read head in the unit. Get a can of compressed air & remove the disk, then use the included tube to insert into the unit door and blow out the dust/dirt that may be collected inside and on the read head. See if this resolves the problem first.

You might get lucky and reset the player with a disconnect/reconnect of the battery. If not and you want to stay with a stock unit, there are plenty available from members upgrading their units, but you will need access to a Tech2 or Nano to sync the procured stock unit to your VIN to get past the anti-theft mode.
