Yes sir Mr. Moderator! Please be lenient with me since this is my first citation in 22 years as a CF Member.

OK, I’ll let you slide this time but don’t let it happen again…LOL
!!…I’m assuming the car didn’t ACTUALLY overheat because it wouldn’t have thrown that DTC…the 0117 is a low circuit code which can either be a faulty sensor or the 5 volt reference circuit is shorted to ground…remove the ECT sensor connector and see if the temp goes to 100 degrees or full cold…you may have to clear the code…if it does the 5 volt reference is not shorted…you can check for 5 volts with a DVOM…when the ECM “thinks” the car is overheating you’ll see the REP because the ECM will start to shut off fuel injectors to keep the engine temp down.

The engine did overheat! My question is could a faulty Coolant Temperature Sensor be the cause? Could this keep the fans from coming on or other ECM actions thinking the engine was cold?

If the engine actually overheated it would not throw that DTC…was coolant actually boiling over…what did you visually see that made you think it was overheating ???…it is a circuit code you are seeing which is wiring related or a sensor…with that DTC I would expect to see the cooling fans run…that code is telling the ECM the engine is hot not cold.

Analog temp gauged pinned at 260 degrees
Driver info cluster showing multiple waring messages about high coolant temps
Engine on reduced engine power
Steam coming from cap on coolant reservoir
Abnormally high underhood temp

If that was the case you have 2 problems…the DTC and an actual overheat…you’ll have to chase your overheat first and then look at the circuit….like I said remove the ECT connector and see if the coolant temp changes on the gauge and DIC or check for 5 volts on one of the 2 wires…can’t remember the wire color off the top of my head…you may have to clear the DTC….that’s all I got !!
