New guy here, hello all, I’ve been a motorcycle performance guy for quite a while but have recently gotten a 2010 C6 Vert and I like it. Looking to add some pep to the car (it’s all original) and thought I’d like to change the rear gear from 2:56 to 3:15. Also wanting to get a Cam Motion 220/230 .595” 116. The trans is a A6 and I’m pretty sure I want to stay with the stock converter. However when I priced the rear diff mod parts and install was $4000. I then checked on the cam and install with dyno tune (cam, springs, 3 bolt gear kit) and that was $4000 also….maybe they had lifters and rocker upgrades in there too. It was an email request and ballpark estimate? This is my approach to gaining some performance, should it cost this much?
I started pricing things out and like yourself I was doing the math and hit the breaks the mods I was planning to do.
For me the smaller mods weren’t worth it and I just went and had a supercharger installed.
Best bang for buck imo on these cars and now im don’t w the mods.

Agreed... I've got the ECS kit and Kooks headers on my car and it's absolutely wild compared to stock. Rear end gearing isn't an issue as much because 1st gear is just tire smoke unless you roll into it up to around 30 mph. Drives like stock though until you get into it.
Be very careful..........Once you start down the mod path you will never turn back. You will never get to the performance of a modded bike without some BIG dollars. For me part of the fun is doing the install stuff myself. And if it breaks I know how to fix it. If you take the install fees out your upgrades get a lot cheaper. You may have to get some tools along the way, but there are plenty of people here that can help you out.
If you did just the gear change and new torque converter it will make a huge difference if you can get traction. Even a new torque converter alone would probably pickup a few tenths at the track. Cam install price seems similar to down where I am but I highly doubt that includes lifters. People say a supercharger is the best bang for the buck (which it probably is), but when I started pricing it out it got expensive really quick. Cam, install, btw you might want to do the springs while you’re there, plus a meth kit or fuel system, possibly E85. It never ends. A cam, gear, and torque converter on your car will easily make it a 10 second car. Good luck with your decision.
There have been a lot of people who did gear changes and found very little, if any improvement. The gear, the tire height, and the ratios in the A6 all seem to work together very well. I just did a converter, full exhaust, rod mod intake, cam, and tune. Cost me $6500 ( installed ) then I sold removed parts and it brought it down to around $5000. Going to the track on Thursday. Hoping for mid 10’s.
You can't do 3.15's - that's a C5 auto gear ratio. The C6 "performance" ratio is 2.73, which you might already have - you need to check the PRO stick in the glove box. The only real choice for a gear upgrade is a 3.42 diff from either a Z06 or a 2010-2013 GS manual car - expect to pay 2K + for one, but you CAN do the install yourself if you're used to doing mechanical stuff.
I just got a quote for about $2800 I think to do the torque tube rebuild and swap out the diff on my 06 auto - it's about a 14 hour job total. I picked up a 3200 Yank converter as well since this would be the time to get it installed - 5 minute job at that point.
You can do a supercharger install yourself in a long weekend and have stock reliablity and drivability till you get on it - then you'd better have some good tires on it. In the long run it's cheaper than doing a cam change and you get way more power. The cam change cost probably includes pulling the heads to replace the lifters - my quote did because they said not to re-use lifters with 80K on them.

Not quite, as RPM Transmissions installs 3.15 gears in a C6 differential. While they are originally C5 gears, they have a way of getting them to fit.
Rear gear changes don't make enough of a seat of the pants difference with the A6 to warrant the cost. Best bang for the buck is the $2 shroud prop, a converter, and a tune. Under $1500 if you can turn wrenches.
Just like a bike, the thrill is mostly the launch.
