Guys,
I just installed a new A6 shifter in my new (to me) 2010 GS. It would not come out of park every time ( after swearing and fiddling with it it would eventually go into D )
So, we installed the new shifter and then started looking at the original defective one. I was lucky enough to have an electrical guy working with me.
We found that the problem was the micro switch which are not available. So, what he did is drill a small hole in the side of the switch just enough to pernitrate the plastic case, then squirt electrical contact cleaner into the switch. Amazingly, it then worked every time. We had it set up on a test bench. Before the fix it worked about once in 10 tries after it worked every time. just thought I would pass it on. FWIW
This is a common problem with the C6 auto shifter. Replacement micro-switches are available. Just replaced my buddies 2007 Base and works perfectly. Replacement switches can be ordered on a number of online retailers. Yellow highlighted part number on page 2 of the attached.
Just in case you want/need to fix it in the future.
I got fed up with the whole ordeal and just broke the shifter pawl. No worries now, no micro switches, no nothing….
Shift whenever I want, wether car is running or not….
Wow how did you do this. It would have been helpful on the radio install i did this weekend. I had to keep turning on ACC so I could shift all the way to S so I could get dash cover out
