My 2010 GS with an A6 transmission will not shift out of 1st gear, even with paddle shifters. Also, the speedo quit working. I just replaced the rotors and pads all around, took it for a drive to break the pads in, cooled the brakes, put it away driving fine. The next day I went to drive the car and these issues started. Check engine light on. Haven't been able to drive it to get codes since it will not get out of 1st gear. Anyone hear of this before? I did a serch but didn't really come up with anything but the VSS. Checked all of the wheel sensors to make sure I didn't bump one. Has me baffled. Might need to buy a code reader
You’d be better off buying a scan tool that can read all modules for codes…most code readers can read only Powertrain or “P” codes…since your check engine light is on its most likely a P code which affects the vehicle emissions…a VSS would not set a P code.
Guess I'll have to do a little research on codes. I would have thought it would have thrown a Powertrain code. Anyhow, I've been needing a scanner! Will have to check those also
I highly recommend this Autel..this is a bidirectional scan tool so you can command outputs like your fuel pump, AC compressor, and blower motor to turn on and run…makes diagnosing very easy…you can look at “live data” also which really helps diagnosing your car if you have issues like misfires, stalking, etc…a scan tool with this capability is a bargain !!…I’ve had the next higher level Autel which I had for 8 years and it recently crapped out…I’ve decided and picked up a Launch scan tool last week.
I got the codes read and the ones that I’m looking at are P722 and P2723. It also had the P700. Might try to replace the VSS. Looks like the cheapest start along with checking fluid level. Has no leaks and has been working fine. I changed fluid when I pulled the torque tube a year or two ago

Might be a job. Trying to find the location of it. Some posts say it’s in the tranny, some say on diff. About to pi it on lift and look again. Didn’t see it the first time
Update on Vehicle Speed Sensor and the 6L80 A6 transmission problem. The sensor is in the transmission on the A6. Looks like a pretty easy job once you get the pan off. Was going to do it but decided to check the obvious first, fluid level. Was low on fluid! I guess I have a leak in the transmission cooler line. Doesn’t seem to leak while off in my shop. Found it when I had the car idling on the lift. Replaced fluid and everything works as advertised.
