I would like another C6, I had a 2011 automatic with 0 problems. If end up with another automatic c6 should I go ahead and replace the shifter cable before it fails?
I would not unless there are problems. Just replacing the bushings on the cable ends is usually a good fix.
However, there are known problems with the shifter also. I just replaced mine.
I had my speed shop change my cable out when they were servicing transmission and installing headers, cost for labor then is negligible.
After that the micro switch went bad and instead of repair it, I just broke the pawl, easy peasy, no worries now. I know what some will say but I’m keeping this car as I have to much $ tied up in engine work….

The dealer I bought my car from agreed to replace my shifter with a new one. I added a cable release just in case the problem reoccurs.
i know this post is super old but how do i go about adding a cable release?
Attach a cable to the shifter park pawl and run it thru the console into the storage area under the armrest. This way if there ever is a problem I can pull the cable and release the shifter.
Some people actually cut the pawl out completely which I personally think is dangerous.

If budget-wize you can do it, why not? A garage will charge around $600 to $1k for a shifter cable replacement. Otherwise, you can just drive until it happens...but I'd replace both bushings when one breaks and falls out.
