Is it the solenoid that is getting shot or the entire starter/solenoid combo from the heat of my LT headers? I am looking at heat shields, and there is one that looks like it covers just the solenoid only from DEI. Thanks
I have a 2010 ZR-1 with long tube headers, car now has 15K miles, at 11K miles the starter failed from Heat, after gathering a lot of different info from Forum members. this is what I did: All C7 Corvettes have a factory heat shield installed for the starter, it mounts to added bosses on the C-7 starter. (So GM realized they had a problem on the C-6, and corrected it on the C-7), I purchased a factory GM C-7 Starter & heat shield, (you need to change the electrical connector on your C-6 starter harness to a C-7 connector, which is available at your Chevy dealer, along with the starter & heat shield. the C-7 starter is functionally the same as a C-6 except for the added bosses & Connector. I installed the new starter & heat shield (little bit of rework on the heat shield due to the LT headers) I also wrapped the header where the starter is close with heat reflecting Material, this combination has worked OK for the 4K added miles. Maybe other people have done this also. Good Luck, Jim
When my starter failed I wrapped the new one in heat reflective tape. I will try something else once I install my long tubes since I still have the back of the solenoid exposed to the heat.
I am wondering would it make more sense just to replace the entire thing since it's coming out anyway. Summit has new AcDelco starters for like 96 dollars.
The starter solenoid replacement is only like $20 to swap that out on the starter itself, if you did manage to over heat it and crack the terminal off.
