Default Painting Rotor Hats

I am going to paint brake rotor hats and calipers along with installing new pads. Is it ok to paint the entire rotor including braking surface and allowing brake pads to remove the paint from the braking surface while driving?

I’ve done that many times. The paint comes off the fire path as dust. What I don’t paint is the area around the stud holes. In case it’s inconsistent depth.

So just from my experience and opinion. I was going to paint the hats on my rotors. (My calipers are already painted). Did one and it looked absolutely awful.

Got some grinding wheels that go on drills and I spent the time grinding all the rust and shined those rotors up. Looked fantastic! Especially compared to the painted hats. Paint one and look at it to see if that is really the route you want. To me it looks really bad.

You got me thinking. My car is somewhat of a garage queen and the rotors are not bad looking. Do you coat the rotors with anything or just revisit them when rust forms again? I would like to maintain somewhat of an original look.

I painted my stock discs with high temp silver paint. didn't tape anything....the paint wears off the overspray on the friction surface. Mine weren't really rusty, and what little there was i removed with a wire wheel brush in my drill.
After I wash the car, i just use a leaf blower to dry the brakes off so they don't rust

Good point. I was thinking of putting something on it after I got the rotors all clean. Doing my brake fluids soon and figured I would do something then. I have washed it once and no rust. I'm sure a coat of something would be good. Just don't want to get it on the braking surface or pads.

If need be I will just wire brush it from time to time. I was amazed the difference. Need to start taking photos of my work better but was able to zoom into a few pics. I was changing to new wheels and tires. Here is a few pics.

Does anyone know the OEM color for the rotor hats? Thinking of re-painting mine. 2008 C-6 w/ F-55. Looks like flat gray to me, but I'm sure it has a specific name for the color.
Thanks!

DO NOT paint the surface of the rotor. The paint will ruin your brake pads. Sure, the pads will remove the paint with normal braking, but it will stick to the pad.

Use this stuff. Paints over rust. Permanent coating. Any color. Easy to apply and control where it goes, unlike spray. Keep it off the rotor surface.

Cleaned hat

Painted everything because I was having the rotors cut.

Final product after having the rotors cut. Very happy with end results.

Good job! Looks exactly like letting the pads cut the paint. For many years I used spray paint (tracks rotors life is very short) but this last time I used por 15 glossy black and it's really nice.

Didn't know people still cut rotors. Thought they just bought new.

Neither did I!! I was switching to ceramic/low dust pads. The car has low miles on it so the rotors were not bad at all. Anyway, I had my local NAPA store do it and it was $30 a rotor.

I painted my rotor hats with some black Rustoelum rust converter paint a while back. You should definitely mast off the rotor surface. The paint will rub off on the pads and contaminate them.

Fully painting them and then having them turned looks to be a great way to do it as well.

I have tried that paint and for my use it only lasts a year. Though it's thin so when someone does paint the whole rotor the pads wipe it off easily. So there's that, always pros and cons. The Por 15 glossy black really looks nice and stays put longer.
