Valve Spring Removal LS3 - what spring compressor?
Hi All!
I will be swapping the springs on my LS3 C6 using compressed air. I recall someone telling me not to use a certain kind of valve spring compressor as it can cause damage to the springs. Can anyone let me know which kind not to use and the correct style of compressor to order?
I found this compressor that looks like it wouldn't harm anything.
That one looks OK. As long as it says it will do an LS3. The LS7 takes a different mount so you should be OK there. I use an LSM tool but that is way more expensive. The issue you can have with the double spring compressor is that both valves open which is good for a quick change but if you get one valve hung up that won't open your stuck (the one opens fine the other is stuck and all your air blows out). For the price here try the double. I have used both (single and double) and they both have pro and cons. Brodix heads for those reading on the LS7 seem to like the single (I can not quite remember but on double the heavy casting got in the way of something and I had to modify).
Check internet, there are a lot of options out there starting around $20, I have not tried any of them so buy at your own risk. If from Amazon, easy to return if you're not satisfied.
None mention pneumatic/ air powered

Another option is to look on the internet buy a used (LSM or quality tool) one or even a new one use it and then sell it. Think of it like renting the tool. But if you have luck with that one great give it a try.
For anyone with a cam over .600 lift it is part of the recommended maintenance to change valve springs every 25-30k miles. Cheap insurance to keep you from dropping a valve/blowing up the motor.
