I just bought a c6 and the climate control needs to be replaced so might as well do the radio. A $130 pac rp5 kit from amacon is what everyone recommends but do i really need it? Its a base model no onstar, steering wheel controls, ect, and the radio im planning on buying has a built in amp which has caused issues with my previous install on a different car. i had to disconnect the stock amp entirely and just run a harness from my speakers into the amp directly, its hard to find someone doing this since the other method is so popular, does anyone have an idea of what im talking about and which way i would do this properly please.

Even if you run your own audio wiring, the adapter kits are still useful. Among other things, the radio adapter kits include 1) a wiring adapter so you can plug your radio into the car without hacking up the car's harness, and 2) an interface to the Class 2 bus to produce audible chimes and the reverse wire signal.
Need an after market radio adapter, since C6 has not ACC wire for the radio, and the command to turn the radio on and off, comes digitally from the BCM on the serial 2 bus.
As for which after market module, go to cruchfeild, plug in our car year and options and will give you which model to buy. If you plan on upgrading the steering wheel to one with wheel controls and clockspring and needing added wires), then plug in that you have radio controls on the option list..
Hence cruchfeild will tell you which after market module adapter you need, the double din face plate adapter, and the antenna adapter as well, to make the radio install pretty much plug and play. As for amp, pull the remote wire from the radio, and and if RCA for inputs, then use them out of the radio as well.
