Default Transmission failure or something else?

Hello, long time lurker and first time posting. I have an '07 Base model with the T56 transmission and the Z51 package. I may need gears 1-6. 1st gear ratio is 2.97:1 Does any business sell the actual gears? I have called around to numerous places. Gears 1 and 4 are especially difficult to find.

The transmission seems to have locked up while driving 75 mph on the highway in 6th gear. The car creeps forward in both neutral and reverse. The only way to move the car is if someone is in it holding the clutch in. The clutch pedal operates normally. It pushes in and releases all the way back up. Nothing leaked while I waited for the tow truck. Still no leaks under it and it has been over two weeks.

I do not want to tow it to a transmission shop, have them open up the transmission, just to tell me it needs gears. Has anyone else had this misfortune happen to them? I do spirited driving with the occasional pull. No race track racing. Two and a half years of ownership. I am the 7th owner.

Whoa… slow down! It sounds like it could be something with your clutch - the master, slave or clutch itself.

If the clutch doesn’t fully disengage, you will have a hard/impossible time taking it out or putting it into any gear. And if it’s in gear and running with the clutch pedal depressed it will creep.

edit: creeping in neutral is concerning but I don’t know that youve described enough of the symptoms to be able to diagnose online.

I would be happy if it is only the clutch. The car was shuddering and skidding on the highway when it locked up. The "active handling" message displayed on the dash. The only way to stop the shuddering and skidding was by pushing in the clutch. I started it up last week and tried to find as many gears as possible while idling in my garage. I found 3rd and 4th. It will go halfway into 1st gear. The car does not move under its own power. I am unable to get out of the car while it is running. The car will move forward in any gear, including neutral. The car does not creep while the clutch is fully depressed.

Hmmm that’s a bit more serious than it sounded initially. Could be trans, driveshaft, torque tube, clutch… some more investigation is needed and likely some serious disassembly

Thank you Jfryjfry. I will report back with the findings. It is being towed to a local transmission shop next Thursday.

A bit delayed, but here is the update on the car - the output shaft had sheared teeth, 1st, 5th, and 6th gear were damaged. The clutch assembly needed to be replaced. The bell housing was cracked and missing two bolts. The torque tube input shaft was bent and the teeth were damaged. A rebuilt transmission unit was sourced from Texas Drivetrain Performance. It was in the transmission shop for 11 weeks. They said I now hold the record for the longest time a vehicle has been in their shop. I missed out on a lot of driving during the summer. Glad to have it back, although it cost a small fortune to get it back on the road.

So glad it’s all taken care of! It sounds like there was some work done prior that might not have been done properly. That’s a lot to go wrong - probably started with one or two things that just broke/let go/loosened up and caused a host of other issues
