Default Code P0117 after installing plugs and wires

I'm pretty sure I must have done something stupid during the installation of plugs/wires on my 2012 GS. My CanOBD2 responds with P0117 code (Generic Engine Coolant Temperature Circuit Low Input) . Cars screen says: "HOT ENGINE AIR CONDITIONING OFF" but the engine was just cranked. Check engine light on. Temperature gage is not moving from 0 even after driving. Car runs like a raped ape! Wondering if I damaged the temperature wire or sensor by the #1 plug? Any thoughts or suggestions would be much appreciated. Would you replace the sensor or would it probably be wires?

This thermistor circuit has 2 wires…a yellow 5 volt reference and a tan low reference or ECM ground…if you remove the connector and jump across the 2 wires the ECT would max out…if you just disconnect the connector it would read -40 I believe…the 5 volt reference may be shorted to the tan wire or the sensor is bad or you have an open in the reference ground…those wires don’t look good !!

Looks like your harness that plugs into the temp sensor is broken off from the pic. The wire looks frayed....Post some different angle pics

Here's a different angle.

Thank's for the info C5 Diag, I'll check this tomorrow closer. So, you agree that this is probably the issue with all three of these: code, temp gauge and dash message?

This is what sets that DTC…it’s probably the cause…you should make sure your cooling fan is also working.

You can also remove the ECT sensor and take a resistance reading (ohms) across the terminal based on the temperature…you should not see 0 ohms.

for reference: I just replaced this connector last week since mine shattered from the plastic being so brittle. Autozone replacement duralast plug was 10 bucks. This requires stripping/soldering or can be crimped. For the extra clean look you can get yourself a pin kit from amazon or something and depin your current connector and repin to the duralast plug. Many choices.

It appears only the brown wire is damaged.

Thanks man. I did what you said to do. Replaced the pigtail, soldered, used shrink tubing and purchased some braided wire loom which I will install after it cools down. I really appreciate your help.

Edit: The dash is clear of messages and check engine light now but I still have the P0117 & P0118 codes. I'm wondering if I actually had them before and didn't know? Maybe the sensor needs to be replaced as well.

Disconnected the battery for about 10 min. Took for a short aggressive drive and no codes now. Thanks all!
