Auto 4 issues
or can get into these, but problem trying to go farthest with shifter not wanting to go all the way into 1st, or trans just not engaging into 1st with shifter in that postion instead?
Best guess may just be a linkage issue with shifter cable, being the the end of cable grommets are worn/they need to be replaced, and possible once end grommets replaced, then shifter cable re-check for correct adjusted length (if trans is in second, but shifter is in first, then above wear/adjustment would explain why shifter arm at trans ,is still in second gear position, and not pulled all the way into first gear instead)..

Short of that, and dam sure that trans shifter lever on trans has been pulled all the way into first gear position by cable, then trans problems itself.
If grommets are still in good condition, do not have play between and the shafts on the trans lever shaft and shifter assembly shaft, then pop the cable adjuster open with shifter in drive, trans lever clicked so its detent center on drive potion, then close the adjuster on the cable to adjust the cable to correct length.
Hence cable or grommets may have been replace, but you may have slight stretch in the cable over time (or not length adjusted correctly on cable replacement), and as stated, cable just adjusted too long to be able to pull trans lever into first gear detent for last of pull by the shifter assembly.
Now if problem is not the shifter cable or groments, you have the trans in drive, and its not shifting back down to 1st gear when you are about to come to a stop on it own, then could be internal trans problems, or someone really screwed up the trans tune with after market trans tune that is causing problems instead.
