Long story short but I’ve been filling up my c6 half tank due to the strong smell of gas. I know it’s a common thing with 08+ C6s and the gas tanks need to be replaced, it’s a 2k plus job so that’s why I’ve holding off. Now I find out that if tend to fill up half way, one of your fuel pumps will go bad. I think mine is already, car starts up like nothing and no codes. But I hear a whine noise/air noise only when pressing on the gas pedal from a complete stop, the noise would go away secs later. My question is should I fill up the tank to see if the noise would go away? Or the fuel pump can’t be revived no more and I shouldn’t risk it. I’ve been driving like this for months.
Who told you that if you fill up your tank halfway that “one” of the fuel pumps will go bad ??…there is only ONE fuel pump and it’s in the left tank and that needs to be replaced if you have a fuel smell possibly and not the tanks !!…if you keep your fuel level above 1/2 full you may notice this…this may also be a crack in the tank itself but that would have to be diagnosed…when the tank is at a half tank the right tank is empty and the left tank is full if you didn’t know that…there is a TSB for this but due to the time limit the “special coverage” for this issue has expired for C6’s…by the way it’s not a “common thing”…I have an 08 and I don’t have this issue…I’m not good at diagnosing noises so that is something you’ll have to find out for yourself…what do you mean by “car starts up like nothing” and no codes ??…does nothing means it doesn’t start ??..I may have commented on one of your posts 3 months ago concerning this sound…you said a shop smoke tested the engine and no leaks but I would expect a vacuum leak to show itself at idle when manifold vacuum is at its highest…this vacuum will decrease as the throttle blade is opened when you press on the gas pedal.

yes you commented on my last posts, thanks for the responses. The car starts with no problems that’s what I meant, I said that because I know a symptom of a failing fuel pump is when the car has trouble starting up. And I heard that if filling up the tank half way it’ll weaken the fuel pump. Is that incorrect? I know the job to fix the gas odor is expensive, a corvette shop near me gave me an estimate of $2,300 to fix the problem.

YES, that’s incorrect !!…how can filling up the tank halfway weaken the fuel pump ??…like I mentioned when the tank is at 1/2 the left fuel tank is full and that tank is where the electric fuel pump is located…whoever told you that filling the tank will weaken the pump is an IDIOT…get your car properly diagnosed before fixing your fuel tank oder.
