The stud came out when I was undoing it. There is rotten bakelite pieces and dust on the floor too.

That happens to these 17 year old starters…mine was still in good shape…I would just replace it and be done with it.

Hate to say it, but with some off the problem of the rebuilt starters bendexs not fitting correctly (will not retract far enough to disengage from starter ring gear), would just replace the starter solenoid on the starter instead.

Look for ACDelco p/n 10503939 or Waiglobal #66-161 for a little over $20,
and pick up the needed thin profile torque socket for the three torque head bolts to swap out the solenoid on the starter,

For the record, this is what the top of the starter motor looked like when I pulled it. The bakelite has rotted out.

Hello, I have a base 2006 coupe automatic with paddles; my original alternator went bad and I purchased a NAPA brand made specifically for 2006 corvette coupe; had a NAPA authorized shop install on vehicle. Now periodically, while driving, I will get a warning on DIC "service charging system" my battery is new, starter is new (authorized gm parts) and battery will be showing 14.2. warning will display only 5-10 seconds and everything is working fine far as i can tell. wife is now hesitant to drive vette due to periodic "service charging system" message. I've been told vettes don't like parts other than general motors - and have also been told since my alternator is NAPA approved and not from GM that's why I'm getting message to service charging system. What is everyone's thoughts on this. I've also been told when message appears make sure battery is charging at least 14.2 - which is does. THOUGHTS, ADVICE !! i'm Memphis TN - vette has 78K miles.

Your best bet is to take the car back to your shop who did the work as they would be better to diagnose this than we would…there are a few alternator trouble codes that will not illuminate the MIL…let them put their scan tool on the car to see if they are present…I’d have them do a voltage drop test of your charging system but most shops are poor at electrical issues…if anything being the car to an auto electrical specialist.
