I was getting intermittent throttle position sensor codes so I cleaned my new to me 2006 base. It was very dirty, not surprising since it has 100K+. I took the TPS unit off the car and used carb and choke cleaner, rag and toothbrush.
The car now doesn't return to normal idle (600 rpm) immediately. It takes a few (5-10) seconds.
Have I ruined the TPS unit with too much solvent? Do the pivot points need to be lubed (WD 40)? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Read below 2nd paragraph…you may need to drive it several drive cycles. !!…and no you don’t lube the pivot points !!…you only need to clean the bore where the throttle blade closes on…you should clean it every other year.
I've driven a few local trips and 1 interstate highway run of about 20 miles and still have the same problem. When I let off the gas the idle is 1500 plus, sometimes it goes up above 2000 before slooowwwly returning to normal 650-750.
I am sure that I didn't leave any crud that would prevent it closing so without a tech II tool do I have any other options?
You took the throttle body or the TPS sensor off the car to clean it ???…a TPS sensor is normally not removed and cleaned because it is the electrical part of that component…I’d make sure you have no leaks at the TB if it was indeed removed…what codes were you seeing ??…you can open and close the throttle plate by hand to see if it is binding…hope you didn’t take it apart…do you have a scan tool ??…may be a vacuum leak…did you use a NEW gasket during reinstallation ??…you may have a vacuum leak there…it is ALWAYS a good idea to use Service Information when doing any maintenance on your car…this info is from Alldata DIY…you SHOULD get a subscription to it..1 month, 1 or 3 year.
