Default 2011 Base Coupe TPMS Mystery

I know there have been numerous posts about TPMS sensors not reading. I don’t think I’ve found one that matches my situation.

2011 base coupe. Two different sets of sensors from two different tire shops wouldn’t read. Replaced the RCDLR and the TPMS sensors and did a relearn on the second set of sensors. Everything worked fine for a few days, but then for two days in a row, the sensors stopped working on my way into work. Tire pressure XX messages on all four sensors. But then the problem cleared itself when I’d start the car up for the trip home.

Because I’m an idiot who can’t leave well enough alone, I bought a set of Schrader 33700 TPMS sensors. Discount Tire programmed and put them in. (Please dont give me **** about going to Discount Tire.)

At first, they couldn’t get any sensor to read (no honk during relearn mode). Then, they got all but the right rear sensor to chirp the horn. The front left sensor read normally, the front right and left rear sensor to show flat, and the right rear sensor read tire pressure XX.

Now only the front left sensor works and the other three are XX. Discount Tire is going to order OEM sensors in the hopes that it’s a sensor problem. I’ve done my research on the TPMS relearn procedure and I watched and helped them to make sure they were following it exactly how it was written.

With the RCDLR and TPMS antenna being replaced and brand new sensors being installed, does anyone have any suggestions as to what could possibly be overlooked?

First thing it’s not a good idea to cheap out on TPMS sensors due to the added labor if they don’t work…I just ordered 4 new OEM sensors from Rock Auto when I replaced my tires recently and mine were $120.00 a piece and had no issues with the relearn…see if Rock Auto carries your sensors…also where is this “TPMS Antenna” you speak of and who replaced it ??…start out with quality sensors and go from there…how much were your sensors ??…TPMS description below.

The TPMS antenna is inside the trunk, behind the carpet. My mechanic, who’s well know for his skills with Corvettes (his shop is Corvette only) replaced it.

Discount Tire said they were going to order GM sensors at about $60 each. I didn’t ask for a part number because I don’t care. If it’s OEM, it’s OEM. Yes, there are different OEM sensors, but I don’t need to pay almost $500 just for TPMS sensors. Besides, they’re on the hook if it doesn’t work.

Well sorry to say but your well known “Corvette Only” mechanic is an idiot !!…tell him to stick to oil and brake changes…there is NO TPMS antenna and that’s why I asked…the rear antenna (#5 in picture) is part of the Immobilizer system (passive entry) not TPMS…I’d get the old antenna reinstalled and get your money back…there are 4 antennas the others being the back up in the glovebox and the other 2 are in the area around each B pillar…and as far as your sensors you get what you pay for !!

If your Corvette mechanic has the right equipment which he probably doesn’t he could check the antenna carrier signal…the usual 125 kHz signal as seen below for all antennas with a lab scope…have your mechanic show you Service Information stating that it is indeed the TPMS antenna.

The sensors can be sensitive to RFI: Cell phones, LEDs, phone chargers for example, but other electronics will also cause problems. I know this from personal experience although in my case, what happens sometimes is that the LR sensor suddenly reads XX. A restart always clears the error. And it’s not the sensor having a weak battery. From what I recall, RFI can also cause problems when trying to program the sensors in the first place. You want to keep all of that stuff away from the car when you’re trying to program the sensors. I’m not saying that’s your issue, but it’s something to consider.
