I am currently installing(trying to) a Z06 axle back on my manual GS and i just cannot figure out how to finesse this axle back over the axle. I read in some other threads that it can be done on jack stands and to remove the heat shield. Just wondering if someone has tips on how to do this cause im losing my mind lol. Currently looking at corsa axle backs if i can’t figure it out haha.
I remember on my '07 (automatic) when I removed the billy boat axel back part I used 6 ton jack stands (for the height) and then had to replace the cardboard on the floor with a towel because the cardboard was too thick and couldn't quite clear it.
It just took more height than I expected, the muffler had to point almost straight down to get em out and back in.
Last fall I put Billy Boat PRT on my 2005 base Z51 car.
I invested in a set of Race Ramp 14" stackable wheel cribs to get maximum lift on the rear end. Wanted a set anyway. Already had race ramps to bring up the front end
I dropped the sway bar per Billy Boat install instructions
pretty sure I dropped the rear cradle as far as I could without fully removing the hardware. This buys a little more space.
I fully disconnected the center H pipe and hangers for removal and replacement. Bought new OEM donut/gaskets for the front connection of the center pipe to the manifolds
I found that disconnecting the rear most rubber hangers from the back fascia made it easier to put everything back together. I just used a small floor jack to bring everything back up with a 2x4 to get the hangers back in and level everything up
Maybe it's not helpful but I was able to get my axle back off of my Z06 on jack stands. Had to get the car about 10in off the ground from where it normally sits but it's doable. I bent the heat shield just slightly but the trick for me was just being patient. Like someone said, you have to get it as close to vertical as you can and find the correct angle. If I remember correctly I rotated the over axle pipe slightly and was just patient. It's a battle of wills!
on my Z06 (3" pipes), I recall I disconnected the sway bar, lowered the subframe and removed the hangers under the bumper. Somehow I forgot that I did also remove the heat shield.
to reinstall I had my brother in law help guide the passenger side up over the axle so as not to snag the electrical connectors. I installed 1pc ZR1 mufflers,
