Default Tie bar Valve train noise

Hot debate I know…

this is my first fully rebuild motor.
Lq4 I’m not sure this sound is normal.
this is the first start about up to operating temp. It was a little louder before it got to temp.

lifters are gatermen tie bars
.090 total travel. They are set up at .040 (measured with dial indicated)

Rockers are comp cam magnum full rollers, 1.8 ratio, non adjustable

with the 1.8 ratio rockers the cam is .630 lift 238/242

I’ve heard headers make it more noisy too

If you've never ran roller rockers in the past, in my experience they will make more noise than scrub nose rockers, but typically they are quiet at start up and get louder as they warm up. What size injectors are you running? If you have larger injectors you could be hearing them ticking like this:

I couldn't hear anything out of the ordinary but its hard to tell through a video, I run those same Gaterman tie bars but at a little less preload of .030, my cam has slightly more lift and duration than what you are running but my valvetrain is definitely a little louder than in your video. I get the full "sewing machine" noise like this:

Alot of variables but IMO aggressive cam lobe ramp rate and headers will make your valvetrain alot louder than before. If you are worried something is wrong, check your valve/rocker tips, and pushrod ends after a few hundred miles. If either of those looks to be getting chewed up in a few hundred miles, something in your valvetrain is unhappy.

Thank you I appreciate the experience and tips. That second video you showed that dang thing sounds like a diesel. Mines silent compared to that. I will definitely be checking things over in a couple hundred miles. I’m using 50 pound injectors. I’m sure they’re making a tidbit of noise too. Unfortunately, I did find a small coolant leak from the rear steam port as well so I had to take the manifold off. It’ll be a week before I get it back on because you know Work lol thanks for the thoughtful response again. It is helpful.

Your engine sounds perfectly normal. Large cam and headers will make lifter noise more prominent. But the engine sounds like the normal LS sewing machine noise.
