I didn't have a good experience with lo lack. I had an electrical problem that they couldn't locate after replacing several parts they yanked out the Lo jack and the problem went away. This happened after I had the car for 2 years.
I didn't try going back to lojack cuz my time is too valuable to argue what appeared to be an uphill battle . My word vs theirs.
So I just bought a mini cooperS and when the finance manager went to sell me lojack I explained my story and he let it go.
If you option the navigation system, I would imagine the OnStar system can locate the vehicle and shut it down once the authorities are within striking distance. Big brother is getting more control, but the pure thought is nice at least.
The add info for OnStar says something about vehicle theft recovery. And it makes sense that for OnStar to work, it has to have GPS tracking. I doubt if they would set up OnStar so that they could shut down the car (in case of theft). Technically, it would be a piece of cake, since they can unlock your doors, but I doubt if they would be willing to assume the liability for taking such action. It could accidentally happen at the wrong time. Just get the OnStar.
I am fairly sure the Caddy dealer told us that OnStar will track the vehicle, locate it, than call the driver of it to inform he/she that they will shut the vehicle down. I will look throught the owners manual to see, but I am fairly sure GM all ready employs this tatic. They can all ready run ECM diagnostics over the sytem(actually had a stability warning error in the Caddy and they diagnosted it for us over the phone).
Maybe so. I guess calling the owner first might make it more feasable. I have no doubt that they can do it. I just wonder about liability. What if they shut it off while some idiot is in a big curve, loses power steering, veers straight into an oncoming car, or loses power brakes and slams into the back of another car.....GM's gett'in sued! I see too much liability in todays world of ambulance chasers.

My understanding now is that OnStar can shut a vehicle down along with several other capacities. Whether or not GM will actually do it is a matter of liability(as you both state). You cannot seperate the OnStar from the ability for GM to do this(it is not a seperate option). If police where actually in pursuit of the vehicle and knew it was located through OnStar, I imagine they could ask for the vehicle to be shut down.
By the way, OBD-III specs include much more intrusive capacities and will hopefully never be incorporated into vehicles.
I had Lojack installed in my 2001 C5 shortly after delivery , 35 % insurance discount.....................installed by Lojack , no problems & works for me. >>> The Dog.
Are you really going to want the car back?????? and if not why install it. I hear of cars being found but I don't see a mind share from the police about stolen cars. I've had one car stolen three home breakins and still waiting for our police force to find anyone let alone give a damn.. One of the breakins they know who did it but you can't believe the run around. :mad
Also according to some reliable sources, short of flatbedding the car it probably will not be running anyway.
I paid $350 for Lojack, installed( AAA had a special for members) that was in Sept 2000, & the 35% auto insurance discount was worth it , Massachusetts auto rates are very high...the Mass State Police have Lojack eguipped cars & have a 6/10 hour recovery rate & have beeb getting the stolen cars quick & finding the chop shops before the cars are messd up...........anyways works for me>>>>>the Dog :flag Note.the car does not have to be started BUT, the owner needs to be aware its been stolen, then you call the Stae police & they activate the Lojack system (must be majick )........also>>>>>>> DONT vote for KERRY<<<he is a jerk
