Default C6 Oil consumption

I previously owned a new 1999 C5 Automatic and my neighbor owned a 2000 C5 6 speed. I had no problems with oil consumption. My neighbor used about one half quart every 1,000 miles. I understood that the LS1 with 6 speed had blow by at higher RPMs. The automatic C5 never hit these higher RPMs and did not have that problem. I own a C6 6 speed and I just checked the oil and it is down a little. I have less that 500 miles on the car and I wondered if other C6 owners with 6 speeds were seeing any oil usage or if this is normal break-in.

Using a little oil is normal during the break-in period.

Oil changed at 1000 miles. No oil consumption during that period.
NOTE: a little oil consumption, say at 1500/2000 miles is not unhealthy.

Yup, heard that before...my '01 eats about a half quart every 1K miles...funny how my '94 never ate a drop of oil...same driving habits...sounds like GM is raising the BS flag again...

Mine hasn't used any oil according to the dipstick, but at 500 miles the DIC started nattering for me to check oil level when I start the engine. Of course I did, stick says full, oil pressure is normal, etc. WTF?

There is a TSB for 01 vettes concerning oil consumption. GM tried a new piston ring setup in 01 that was, shall we say, less than satisfactory. The TSB involves monitoring oil consumption for a while, and then re-ringing the engine if consumption is excessive. Personally, 1/2 quart doesn't seem too bad.

My C6 MN6 oil level is approx. in the middle of the cross-hatch area. Since I did not check it when I first got it, I don't know if it's actually used a half a quart or not. I've got 900 miles on the odo. No warnings from DIC.

In 2001, they went to a 9lb ring from the previous 14 lb oil ring. I was unlucky enough to have have an ls1 burning 1 qt every 400 miles. Mine was among the most extreme cases. Pinging occured at almost any rpm under load.

I sued for a buyback. It only took one week after I started the process. Got everything I ever paid for the car plus TTL+2. 6 weeks before I turned that car over they re-ringed it with the new rings. Re-ring was done at 17K miles, about a week after my settlement with GM. Kept car until 19K miles (took them a while to arrange the reposession). At 19K miles, 2K after the re-ring, the dipstick shows *ZERO* consumption. I mean not even a little drop. I *KNEW* the re-ringing fixed the problem the instant I drove off with it as the pinging was gone and SOTP power was up a lot. Also, my autotap showed no more KR.

The only reason I didn't go out and buy a 2002 is because they weren't offering the Z06 in a targa.

All I can tell you is that at 400 miles, when I changed the heads, there was a BUNCH of oil in the intake ports.
I only drove it 200 miles with the heads and cam before I pulled the motor and put in a 427.
BTW My 427 doesn't use oil.

2,600 miles on a 10/22/04 C6 (picked it up in Bowling Green) with no oil consumption.

A quart every 2,000 miles is normal, particulalrly in an MN6 car.

A quart every 800 miles is not normal.

Your mileage may vary.

1100 miles. No oil consumption. Checked oil after delivery. It was at the top of hatch marks. Hasn't changed.

Same here, but at 500 miles the DIC started nattering for me to "Check Oil Level". Took it to the dealer. Their diagnostics say it has an ECM fault. The dealer has a new ECM on order. We'll see if the diagnostics know what they're talking about.

I've been driving the car pretty hard after 500 miles, and at 2K, mine's also exactly halfway between the two crosshatches on the dipstick. That's very good in my experience. This engine seem pretty bullet-proof.
