Default Lug Nut Torque

I did a quick search and didn't see this addressed before, so I thought I would share something.

The manual calls for 100 ft/lbs or torque on the lug nuts, and I hadn't checked them until tonight Just about all of them were under-torqued, most not by a lot, but they were.

My C6 now has 1800 miles, and as some of you know, they will back off a little on a new wheel. I would get them checked at the dealer or tire store if you don't have a big torque wrench.

Buy yourself a torque wrench. You will find that you use it. Don't depend on anybody else.

I use mine all the time for just this purpose, get a big one (1/2" drive) for lug nuts, etc. Also get a smaller one (3/8" drive) for doing things that can easily strip if you overtorque them (small bolts in alumimum parts, e.g. engine accessories, transmission pan bolts, etc.)

Torque wrench is the way to go.

But in a pinch, you can use math. If you weigh 200 lbs, then standing 6 inches from the center of rotation will give approximately 100 ft.-lbs. of torque. Just make sure you slowly apply the weight and don't jump at all.

But then as soon as you drop it or it is in service for 6 months it is no longer considered accurate is it?

Had to have all of mine calibrated every 6 months to keep those kero burners in the air.
