I was about to put down my deposit on a new corvette. But I wanted to test the manual transmission first for "feel"
Well I sat in a MN6 transmission and I put my foot down on the clutch. The engine was off and I started to shift through the gears using only a light amount of force. I did this twice and the salesman acted like he was going to have a heart attack.
I've done this for years on my other manuals just to practice quick shifting. I've even seen car reviewers on TV do it to demonstrate how notchy a stick can be.
Is there some reason why I can't do that to a C6 vette?
You can shift to your hearts content with the engine off. Salesmen are dumb as a box of rocks and twice as useless. I practice shifting numerous times when at the strip to get the movements perfected. Then when you go to make a run, going through the gears is second nature. Your brain and muscles are replaying all the motions.
Remember when the car is not in reverse the power is on.
Two things:
(1) You can shift through gears with the engine off, but you might find it difficult to get it in reverse with the engine off. This is normal.
(2) The above quote is not exactly true. If the car was shut down without it in reverse, the power is still on. If you shut it down in reverse and then switch to another gear after it has already powered down completely in reverse, the power isn't going to come back on because you switched out of reverse. Just wanted to clarify.

Unfortuneately according to the salesman that spoke to my wife and I when we went in to look for our C6 at Mark Christopher Chevrolet here in Ontario, CA there are very strick rules that must be adhered to when shopping for a Corvette.
On Oct 11, 2004 I was lectured by that A'hole for 5 minutes on the subject.
All I can say is based on what he told me you are fortunate not to have hooks now in the place of your hands.
I bought my car the following night from another dealer with less strick rules. Thank you Rancho Motors in Victorville, CA

You need to make it a point to drive your new car back to the first dealer and show it to the salesman and his boss and tell him why you bought it somewhere else.
