Default Wheel Clearance

Anyone know if C5 wheels, 17' front, 18" rears will clear the wheel cylinders (front) on a non Z51 C6. The rotors are the same diameter but though it is worth asking. I am looking to use them with Goodyear EMT M & S tires for the winter.

Deervallley, I had the same question. I do not think you can use a 17" wheel on the front of the non Z51 C6 because of lack of caliper (wheel cylinder) clearance.
The rear, however, should work. I know that a stock C5 front 17" wheel can be used on the rear of a C5 and with a 245x50x17 will work perfectly and it is in fact the same diameter as the stock 275x40x18. I have experience with this set-up and it will work.

I measured the clearance today from the certer of a C6 rear wheel to the caliper and it is essentially the same as the C5. Approximately 7". It appears that you could use a stock C5 18" on the rear of the C6 and with a stock C5 tire size of 275x40x18 have the same diameter. Bottom line... I think you can use an 18" on the back of the C6 instead of the stock 19" but I think you are stuck with an 18" on the front of the C6.
Let me know how you do.

Bob

I allready have the wheels and tires (used them on my C5) The rotor diameter is the same as a C5 on the front but I'm not sure what they have done with the wheel cylinder. The Goodyear M & S tires work great. I would not normally drive my vette in serious snow but I have driven in some very icy conditions. I hope it will work, I have a C6 on order and expect it in Feb.

deervalley, hello again. As I said in my post above, I think the rear wheel from your C5 will work perfectly on the C6. It is the front that I think we will both have a problem. I may be trying to do the same thing as you if I go ahead with a C6.
Even given that the front rotors are the same diameter on both the C5 and C6, I do not think it is possible to reduce the WHEEL size on the front of either car and have sufficient caliper (wheel cylinder) clearance. If my measurements are correct, you CANNOT install a smaller than 17" front on a C5 and it looks like you cannot go smaller than 18" (front) on the C6. The rears appear able to reduce by 1" on both cars and work. I have installed a 17" on the REAR of a C5 and it works perfectly.
My plan is to use stock C5 REAR wheels on front and back of the C6 to obtain adequate caliper clearance. (18's all around)
Tire sizes will be 275x40x18 REAR....245x40x18 front.
These sizes will be the same DIAMETER as the stock C6 and not produce adverse effects on speedometer, traction, ABS, etc. I have 4 C5 rears that I can use.
Please let me know if I am missing something or if these calculations make sense.

Bob

Since you own both sets of wheels why don't you just try a front. There is no magic. If it clears the caliper (what you refer to as the brake cylinder??) you are fine. Look for >=1/8" clearance around the Caliper in both axes.
