Default CAGS insatall question

My CAGS plug set from GMP Parts just arrived.
The install instructions say to disconnect the negative cable from the battery.
I don’t think this is necessary. With the ignition off I doubt if there
is any power at the plug.
Has anyone installed without disconnecting battery?
Or can anyone tell me why it should be disconnected?
thanks

Can I ask why you would risk anything and waist your time asking?
It probably took you longer to write that message than it would have taken you to disconnect the battery

But to answer your question, just because the car is off doesn't mean there is no power going to it. How do you think you can have lights on in a car with the ignition off?

In other cars when disconnecting the battery I have lost all presets like seat, mirrors, steering wheel, radio settings.

There are many arears in the car that do not have power until the ignition is on. Obviously there is power to some areas like kocks and some lights

But a lot less time than it takes to reset all the radio stations, the clock, relearn the FOB's, and relearn the PCM data by driving 50 miles!

No. You don't need to disconnect the negative battery terminal. I've done three CAGS eliminator installs without disconnecting the battery and with no trouble: two C5's and my C6. "Disconnect negative battery cable" is a precaution and is the first step any time you work with the electronics of the car. It's a good precaution that prevents things like pulling the wrong plug (one that is powered), accidentally slipping with your screwdriver and shorting something unrelated to what you are working on, etc. etc. etc. For the CAGS eliminator, I had done them before and felt comfortable that the precaution of disconnecting the battery was unnecessary.

It's up to you, but as the lawyers say, do it at your own risk.

Took my meter with me, its not hot. If you want to do some useless step then I would suggest opening the gas cap. You dont need any tools for that. Seriously, the batterey step is a waste of time in this case.

Default Cags install

A very simple procedure involving a dead electrical harness with the ignition off. It would take more time disconnecting the battery than it would installing the CAGS eliminator. Spend the extra time making sure your car is jacked up safely and forget about the battery.

just a quick question for the radio shack cags eliminator setup. How did they find out it only takes that resistor ? How did they find out that that resistor is the right one, etc.

Just did the Cags', and didn't disconnect-ZERO Problems and didn't have to reprogram that damn Homelink/Genie rolling codes. Which is good since the wife said your on your own if you ever have to reprogram that thing!

Default CAGS Install

I had the same question when I installed my CAGS two months ago. I believe the battery disconnect is just to avoid legal liability issues. I did not disconnect the battery and my install went without incident and the car performs great.

I did not disconnect the battery when installing my CAGS eliminator. Zero problems.

Not everyone has power to their "kocks and lights"...

For the above poster- CAGS=Computer Assisted Gear Selector. There is an aftermarket product that defeats this allowing you to shift anytime you want.
