Starter - second one melted.. any aftermarket options?
So I've now overheated the solenoid on my second starter.
ARH headers with jet coating still too much heat for the starter, so I'm kind of at a loss of what to do next. I wrapped this one but apparently not enough, so now looking at other options.
- aftermarket mini starter that has a bit more shielding.
- some heat shield for the starter that actually works?
- just friggin jet coat the starter to reflect heat better.
Has anyone slayed the heat demon for starters yet? I hate being left stranded by a solenoid cracking due to heat, and my wife will never let me hear the end of it if she gets stranded by one.

Can you post a pic of the starter where you had the issue?
What sort of wrap / shielding are you using (brand, pic if possible)?
I've been looking at a few solutions (I haven't had an issue yet, but trying to be proactive) - one of them is basically a semi-flexible heat shield that utilizes stainless steel ties to attach to the header (would be similar to the factory exhaust set-up).

www.ezshields.com has a template you can use to mold around the starter, I wonder if I get that and put the heat shield wrap on it if it'll start off enough heat.
I used a heat shield wrap like the DEI one from amazon last time, and it obviously didn't work, the solenoid still cracked and the bolt from the battery is now loose in the housing again.

I like it - and this is the stuff I was referring to (I think)..

Or maybe this one - http://www.heatshieldproducts.com/au...n/header-armor
Maybe do both (starter shield and the stuff I posted)!
Their pre-cut underside intake manifold shielding is interesting as well.

My friend and I both had this issue. We both now have this, problem solved!

I had my kooks ceramic coated and I can touch the header immediately after driving the car without getting burned. I have not been near the starter but the underhood temp is much better.
Do your headers get super hot and not able to touch?

Although I don't have a shield I've heard good things about the Thermo-Tec 14150 Starter Heat Shield and have considered one for myself.

40k miles, 22k of those with headers. Still OEM starter, never an issue. Running 2" ARH on a 1000+hp car and starts fine in 110F weather. I think something else is funny on these cars that keep killing starters.

Me too as I've raced on some crazy hot days here and the only time I ever had issues was when either my battery wasn't fully charged or I had an ever so slightly loose connection on the power lead going to the starter solenoid.

It's disentigrating the solenoid nothing else.. physically the rest of the start is fine, but the postive post on the solenoid side just breaks free. I'll take some pictures when I pull it out tomorrow.
I have one sneaky suspicision is that when my AC is on and consdensation under the hood happens I suspect maybe water is hitting the solenoid and cracking it, you can definitely hear it hitting something and sizzling. I always assumed it was the headers.
