Default ls7 evacuated a piston

Well. This was no fun. While goong home after meeting with some corvette friends the night went chaotic. Around 1500-2500 rpm I experienced a huge backfire. My rear view mirror was lit up in an orange glow. When I looked forward I noticed all gauges at 0. Restart was futile. Coolant was on the ground beneath the car after I pulled over. No oil trail. No oil soaked exhaust tips. Pulled the manifold and a ton of coolant came put of it followed by pieces of piston. All valve stems accounted for (wcch stage 2 heads). Heads are still on the car. So no idea regarding the chaos in the combustion chamber /cylinder. Pics to follow.

Yeah. I'm pretty sure this block is going to be a coffee table in its next life.... as much metal ended up in the intake and seeing it in a few intake ports I think it's probably a goner. Seeing all the coolant in the intake and the fact the passenger side motor mount is saturated (but no smoke show during the incident) makes me think the block is cracked.

So sorry to hear about this, hopefully you can determine what cause is, just out of interest what modifications have you done to you car prior to this happening ?

Not far off my set up

I have

ARH headers , msd , nw102 , k&n , btr stage 3 cam , stock heads just reworked valve guides and new stainless exhaust valves

Scary stuff I thought once the heads have been reworked this kind of stuff shouldn't happen.

Unless you had some catastrophic failure somewhere, appreciate it doesn't look like a dropped valve.

Sorry for your pain!

What was oil pressure like before this happened?

Do you think it Seems possible that oil starvation was to blame ?

I don't think this has anything to do with valve drop. All stems are visible. Springs all look ok. The valve heads may be a different story.

Oil pressure at that moment.. I have no idea. It was all reactionary. I was focused on getting off the highway safely. I do know all temps were what I'm used to seeing. ~180 oil and slightly higher coolant.

Reworked heads should prevent a dropped valve, but it isn't a cure all for all problems. There are other reasons for losing a piston.

Sorry to hear this.

How many miles on the motor?

How many miles since the mods / tune?

How much power did it make after the tune?

Did you get an AFR print out after the dyno tune?

What was the target AFR?

Was the car tracked (road course) our other?

Even if they do go bang from time to time I couldn't ever settle for a grand sport over one.

When they go bang it's time to upgrade! , this sounds like something out of the ordinary - my guess is oil pump failed or some form of oil starvation if it is not a dropped valve.
