Actually, we do need more kids like my kid.
He was accepted to this school on his own merit. Based on his GPA, test scores, being an Eagle Scout, and Lifeguard among other things. There are no congressional appointments here. No politics getting him in. He went through 7 weeks of basic training, beginning 3 days after high school graduation. Sworn in to the armed forces at 17. His school days start before 6 AM (4:30 AM during hockey season) and he is up studying until almost midnight most nights. In addition to this, he must pass a Physical Fitness Examination several times a year. He has military obligations most Saturdays, as well as duty several times a month. His summer "vacation" is three weeks long. He will graduate in the Spring with a degree in Civil Engineering and be commissioned as an Ensign. He will either go straight to flight school or to the fleet. He is near the top of his class. He is at the academy because he cares about the environment, and protecting the environment is a big part of the Coast Guard mission.
About the car: In 2013 we made our second trip to Corvettes at Carlisle. I just took my two boys that time around. The older one fell in love with the 2014. We had just visited the Coast Guard Academy. I told him if he got into the academy and graduated I would buy him a 2014 Corvette. Sounds like a bribe but he did not choose to go to the academy because of the car. He and his brother drive our old 2001 Ford Taurus when they are home and they think it is the greatest car ever.
Anyway, here we are, several months away from graduation and it is time to make good on my promise. Because I believe in being a man of my word. My "spoiled" son tried to let me off the hook. We have three college aged kids and student loans up to our neck for his siblings so he knows we can't really afford a C7. But I said what I said. He said he would buy his own car, or take the 78 that we are rebuilding. Instead, we are using his car loan (a very low interest loan given to all seniors at his school) and I am making the payments. Because he is getting it early, he is going to pay for 1/2 of the payments for the first few months. His idea.
Not bragging, but you called me out.
BTW -after I posted this I saw that you edited your original post. Thanks for that.

Le Mans Master
You are a few months away from seeing used C7 prices drop several thousand dollars. I know because I bought in Feb 2017 and the used market was lower than it is now and people become more desperate to sell.
I was seeing very loaded low mileage Vette's last year for low $40's and moderately mileaged cars for high $30K's. I suspect in a few months you will have lots more options if you don't find one before then.
You raised a great kid, enjoy and post some pictures when the deal goes down!
