Can anyone tell me the official law for running nitrous on the street? What I have been told that in general you can have everything installed, you just cant have the line connected? Is that true? I live in Alabama and I am pretty sure they don't give a crap but I am wondering about other states.
To instantly go to the most strict one, what are the rules in California? Is it if you just get pulled over buy a cop it has to be unhooked? What about smog tests and the visual check? Do they need a carb#?

Yes.

Don't know about California, but in NJ you cannot have the bottle open or the system "on". Most people will hide the system. When I was running it on my Camaro, I also had to renew a permit every 2 years. The permit use to be free, but they now charge money for it ($5 or more). It basically says where you purchase your nitrous and what you use it for.. race car purposes. In NJ, you have to give a copy of the permit to the speed shops that will fill your bottle. They will not do so without the permit. Smog tests won't matter. Nitrous is really just an oxidizer so your system will actually be cleaner anyway. I don't think they come with a carb# (mine didn't) because it's not street legal to begin with. Bottom line, most people just hide the system and the switches and then there are no visual inspection worries from the police if you get pulled over. If you decide not to hide it, make sure you have an up to date permit in the car and the system is disconnected from the bottle.

If tuned for a small dry shot you can fit a 2-1/2lb bottle where the washer bottle is/was.....remote valve for filling it in place from a larger bottle. Done and plumbed right it would be hard to spot.
Don't know the answer for your state but I just got off the phone with the Osceola county sheriffs dept. and according to them you can have it hooked up etc.
If you are speeding then you will get a ticket for that but not for having it hooked up etc
I'm pretty sure this is a state or province wide thing. Adding nitrous boosters became very popular especially when those Fast and the Furios movies came out (It was like every car in Vancouver had some sort of custom thing on it - Especially the rice rockets). I HIGHLY encourage you to check with your local authorities as the fines can be quite high in some places.
